When Free Is Better

There are some things in the world that should be "free". I realize, of course, that we do, in fact, pay for these things one way or another, whether thru a cost-included initiative, or if it's thru taxes or something, but it's "free" nonetheless.
Or things can be free in the sense you pay cost-only, no fee, does that make sense?
Some stuff should just be free.
Like the bread at restaurants. Let's start small, that should be free. We're overpaying like 600% for that bowl of pasta, I'll bet, so gimme the bread free. I dunno, it just seems fair to me.
Also, health care. Sick people don't get sick by choice, so placing a financial burden on their families is wrong. Cancer patients go bankrupt paying for chemo in the USA and that's wrong. I realize the "ObamaCare" thing is gonna kick in but the fact the "greatest county in the world" charged 3500% for a plaster cast and a five-minute XRay is strange. People who have cosmetic surgery, sure, make them pay thru the nose for needing bigger boobs and a smaller nose, but the lady who's removing a scar from her face should get a buy, at least a little right? Because there's a difference between plastic/repairable surgery and cosmetic surgery, you know? The kid who needs an appendectomy shouldn't have to pay for it, the government and tax dollars should protect the life of their citizen. A country should protect the life and rights of their citizens, even if it means I have to pay a little more on my taxes. I'm cool with that.
My country (Canada, for those who have forgotten) has had free health care for as long as I remember, and we haven't become socialist/communists over it, and we are four on the HDI (as of 2009). The USA? Seventeen. Nineteen if adjusted for women-related crimes. Canada was four, in both categories. Nineteen! And this is the "greatest county in the world"? No, Canada definitely wins. Speaking in averages, we work less over a lifetime, make more money, retire sooner, have healthier families, drive better cars and attend better schools than people in the USA. We have a stronger, cleaner economy and no country in the world is screaming "Death to Canada". We are the only country that South Park can be completely and totally racist towards with absolutely no retribution. Why? Because we understand that that sort of thing doesn't matter. We have the best stereotype in the world! What's a Canadian? A polite, quiet, coffee- and beer-drinking guy in a toque. We say "eh" at the end of our sentences. The stereotypical American? A rude, loud, fat slob wearing an eagle t-shirt. Frenchman? Weird moustache, beret, with that really long cigarette thing and smells like wine and drinks enough of it too. We have the best stereotype, and we're definitely the true winner in the "New World's Quest for a Better Life Outside of Europe". But I'm off topic. What else should be "free"? (The world's best stereotype is based on true Canadianism, BTW)
Passports should be cost-only or free. I had to pay almost a hundred and fifty dollars to get my passport renewed last year, and I think passports should be a right of citizenship, no? They should be cost-only at the very most.
Free hugs should be a thing too. Always.
